One of the most comforting and healthful drinks inspired by Ayurvedic wisdom is the digestive lassi — a lightly spiced yogurt beverage that soothes the stomach and supports digestion.
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of life and health, emphasizes the importance of spices like cumin, black pepper, and coriander in balancing digestion and promoting overall wellness. Combined with probiotic-rich yogurt, this drink is both delicious and deeply nourishing.
Why This Lassi Works
Cumin (Jeera) gently stimulates digestion and detoxifies the digestive tract.
Black Pepper (Kali Mirch) enhances digestive fire (agni) and helps nutrient absorption.
Coriander cools and calms inflammation, balancing the warming effects of cumin and pepper.
Yogurt provides probiotics that nurture gut health and aid digestion.
This drink is especially wonderful after meals or during hot weather when the digestive system needs gentle support.
Ingredients:
1 cup plain yogurt (whole milk or homemade preferred)
½ cup filtered water (chilled or room temperature)
½ teaspoon roasted cumin powder
A pinch of black pepper powder
A pinch of roasted coriander powder (optional)
A pinch of rock salt (sendha namak)
Fresh mint leaves (optional)
Small slice of fresh ginger or ¼ teaspoon ginger juice (optional)
Instructions:
Whisk the yogurt and water together until smooth and frothy.
Stir in cumin, black pepper, coriander powder, salt, and ginger if using.
Garnish with mint leaves for a refreshing twist.
Serve chilled or at room temperature.
When to Drink It
After meals to soothe digestion and prevent bloating or gas.
During warm weather as a cooling and hydrating beverage.
Whenever digestion feels sluggish or heavy.
Avoid drinking on an empty stomach or late at night if you have a Kapha constitution or are prone to sluggish digestion.
